A cross-dock facility is a warehouse designed so inbound freight is unloaded, sorted, and reloaded onto outbound trailers with minimal or no storage time in between — sometimes within hours. Cross-dock buildings are typically "double-loaded," with dock doors on both long sides of a narrow building, allowing freight to move straight through rather than being staged deep into the facility.

How cross-dock layouts work

A true cross-dock building is narrower and more elongated than a standard distribution center, since freight needs to travel a short distance from inbound to outbound dock rather than being stored in deep racking. Buildings are often 150 to 200 feet deep — far shallower than a 600+ foot deep bulk distribution building — to minimize the internal travel distance for pallets and cases.

Dock door density is much higher than a standard warehouse because both sides of the building need door coverage, and because throughput volume per square foot is significantly higher than storage-oriented buildings.
